Bayesian Item Response Theory and Equating Applied to Scratch Programming Courses for Upper Elementary and Junior High School Students

Abstract:

This study compares the analysis results for the Entry-level and Bronze-level Scratch programming courses (Kozakai, 2025) conducted from 2021 to 2023 for elementary and junior high school students at Nagoya City University. Students for the programming courses were randomly recruited from the same grade level in each course. Therefore, the population distributions of the Entry-level and Bronze-level groups were considered  sufficiently similar to allow direct comparison of medians and means without performing equating. However, when tests consist of different items, equating becomes necessary, and this study provides a concrete example of such a case. Based on these results, the learning outcomes for Scratch programming from 2021 to 2023 can be confirmed.
